Responsibilities

I read an interesting article the other day Lack of chores making children irresponsible, claims survey It is about children having less responsibility in the care of their home and families than they used to. It was interesting to read that over the past few decades, children's chores and expectations have changed a lot! Even more interesting, the article says, less or no household chores make children LESS responsible. Wow. Really?

"Until the 1980s, staff at parenting magazines and parents who wrote in agreed that chores helped children develop empathy and a desire to contribute to the well-being of others, she said. Between the 1930s and 1970s, adolescent and pre-adolescent children were expected to plan menus, shop and prepare meals for the family. They were given responsibility for tasks including nursing sick family members, keeping household accounts, decorating or even helping to maintain the family car.
By the end of the article, it is suggested that parents give their children more responsibilities that are not bribed or paid to be done. Instead, use it as a time for families to bond, for children to be praised for their efforts and to learn. Here is one list of things students your age can be expected to do at home: 9 Year Old Chore List

So, naturally I am curious. Do you have chores or responsibilities at home that are more than doing homework? Do your siblings have some as well? Do you do them together? Do you get paid for them or is it expected? How do you feel about them - do they make you a better person? :)

  4. Yes, I have chores and they are loading the dishwasher, folding blankets and sometimes watching my little sister. My older sister, Annaliese, also has chores and she mainly does the babysitting, puts clothes into the washing machine and cleans up the kitchen one more thing she does is baking breakfast. I do not do my chores with my sister but sometimes we make our beds together. I like doing my chores and I think they do make me a better person by making me not as lazy as I used to be!

  12. At my house I take care of our Guinea Pigs. Their names are MidNight and Fizzy. My siblings aren't quite responsible enough to take care of them yet. I do not get paid for taking care of them, but that's ok. I enjoy taking care of our pets. Sometimes when my mom is away I put my little sisters to sleep and I get paid for that. Sometimes my mom gets mad at my dad because I'm putting them to sleep.

  16. Yes, I do have chores to do at home. Me and my sister always have to dry dishes. We don't usually do dishes together because it would get crowded. Sometimes we do other chores if our Mom says so. My system is to get over it, and no, I don't really care about doing chores, but my Mom gives us 5$ every Saturday.

  27. Yes,I do have daily chores that I have to do without getting paid. However, I do have the choice to do extra chores to get extra money such as taking out the compost, vacuuming and and cleaning out the van. I am not the only one who does chores, my sister does chores too. The whole family has daily chores. Except for my little baby brothers 'cuz their too small and it's usually them causing all us to do our chores. In fact, me and my dad call them the Distructo brothers. Does Emmet have daily chores?
